Carex hostiana Tawny Sedge

Hesgen Dywell-Felen

DC.

Tawny Sedge is mainly a species of wet flushes and marshy grasslands, but it also occurs sometimes in grassy communities near, or in, the upper saltmarsh where it can be confused with Distant Sedge (Carex distans). It is occasional in West Glamorgan, most common in Gower, but it has probably undergone significant populations decreases in recent decades resulting from the loss of suitable marshy grassland habitat, particularly in the uplands of Neath Port Talbot. It is usually a good indicator of species-rich marshy grasslands that are flushed with base-rich water.
