(Huds.) Holub
Bromopsis ramosa (Bromus ramosus), Hairy Brome, is a tall, tufted perennial grass of woodland and other shaded habitats. It might be mistaken for Giant Fescue (Schedonorus giganteus), but the spikelets are much more droopimg and the sheaths are distinctly hairy, particularly at the base of the stems. Although it is widespread in Britain, particularly in woodlands on basic soils, it has been rather scarce in West Glamorgan until recently but may be extending its range in Gower. It has a rather scattered distribution in the county as a whole. Its occurence in the valley woodlands of Neath Port Talbot may be a good indication of ancient woodland status.
