Brassica rapa subsp. campestris Wild Turnip

Erfin Gwyllt

Brassica rapa subsp. campestris, Wild Turnip, is the most commonly recorded subspecies of Brassica rapa in West Glamorgan. Virtually all records are from roadside habitats. It shold be noted however that Brassica rapa subsp. campestris, also known as Bargeman's Cabbage, is descibed by Stace (New Flora of the British Isles, 4th Edition)  as a denizen along water courses. Nevertheless, Tim Rich's monograph on the Crucifers of Great Britain and Ireland descibe this taxon as widely introduced in bird seed and locally abundant on roadsides, railways and waste ground in general. We have followed Tim's guidance and on that basis we regard Wild Turnip as a more abundant roadside species than Oil-seed Rape (Brassica napus subsp. oleifera) in West Glamorgan.
