Betula x aurata B. pendula x pubescens

Borkh.

Betula x aurata is the hybrid between Silver Birch (Betula pendula) and Downy Birch (Betula pubescens). The extent to which it is intermediate between it parents and the variation it exhibits in parental characters often make it difficult to identify. It is recommended that the Atkinson Discriminant Function is used for accurate determinations. Experimental hybrids seem to resemble Downy Birch more than Silver Birch. It could be widespread in West Glamorgan but it has rarely been recorded here and its distribution and status in the county is not understood.
