Betonica officinalis Betony

L.

Betony is a widespread and locally frequent labiate of unimproved grasslands, hay meadows and grassy heathland. Widely spaced, opposite pairs of leaves are produced on stems which are usually up to 30cm tall, the lower leaves on long stalks and the upper leaves below the inflorescence, unstalked. Compact spikes of flowers, which are usually purple, are produced at the top of the stem. Some populations also contain white-flowered individuals. In West Glamorgan it can be found in open woodland, cliff-heath and species-rich unimproved grasslands such as hay meadows.
