Bergenia cordifolia Heart-leaved Bergenia

(Haw.) Sternb.

A rhizomatous perennial that produces large, toothed, evergreen leaves. Attractive, pink, saxifrage-like flowers appear early in the year on upright, leafless stem. It is commonly grown in parks and gardens and it occurs occasionally as a garden escape or a relic of cultivation. It is rarely found naturalised very far from gardens. Elephant Ears (Bergenia crassifolia) is similar but  has purple coloured flowers and different shaped leaves.
