L.
A spiny, deciduous shrub with small, sharply toothed, oval leaves. The spines are 3-forked and arise on the grooved twigs. Clusters of small, drooping, yellow flowers are produced in early summer. It may be native in some parts of Britain but records from West Glamorgan are invariably of plants that have been planted in hedges or similar places. Several species of Berberis are grown in gardens and of these Berberis glaucocarpa was recorded as a garden escape in Blackpill by Elsie Wakefield in 1911.
Neophyte but usually planted.
