Winter-cress (also known as Common Winter-cress) is a locally common biennial or perennial plant in Britain and a charcateristic species of  of riverbanks and shingle. It also occurs occasionally along woodland edges, in roadside verges and ditches and as a ruderal in waste places. Unlike American Wintercress (Barbarea verna), the stout, angular stems bear clasping leaves which are only pinnatisect at the base of the stem and the cylindrical or slightly 4-angled fruits bear the persistent remains of the style at their tips, like a little peg. It is an occasional species in West Glamorgan with scattered records mostly from river shingle and ruderal habitats.
