L.
Hart's-tongue is a very common, almost unmistakable fern which occurs in rocky places, on walls and particularly in woodland. It is winter-green and fairly shade tolerant and often occurs in large populations in woodland and hedgerows. It is widespread and common in West Glamorgan and it is a common feature of the rocky, limestone woodlands of Gower. It is also a common species on walls in urban enviroments. The common name alludes to characteristic tongue-like fronds, like that of a deer (Hart). The older name for this species, Phyllitis scolopendrium, may be more familiar to some people.
