L.
Asparagus officinalis, Garden Asparagus, is a dioecious, rhizomatous perennial native to central and eastern Europe and Asia, but cultivated widely for its edible shoots. It becomes naturalised in dry sandy soils and dunes quite readily and has naturalised itself in much of southeast England. It is more erect and robust than the rare native Wild Asparagus (Asparagus prostratus) which it might be confused with. It is fairly uncommon in Wales, but there are a few scattered records of it in West Glamorgan, mostly from Gower where it occurs as a garden escape.
