Arum italicum Italian Lords-and-Ladies

Pidyn y Gog Eidalaidd

Mill.

Arum italicum, Italian Lords-and-Ladies, is a very distinctive Arum present in West Glamorgan as the subspecies Arum italicum subsp. italicum, which is not native. It has rather thick, arrow-shaped leaves, with conspicuous whitish-cream veins that appear in winter long before the leaves of Lords-and Ladies (Arum maculatum) emerge. Unlike the spadix of Lords-and ladies, the spadix of Italian Lords-and Ladies is yellow. It is invariably a garden-throwout which is able to naturalise, persist and spread locally by rhizomatous growth.
