Anisantha madritensis Compact Brome

(L.) Nevski

An annual grass that can grow up to 60cm tall but is generally much smaller. It resembles a small version of Great Brome (Anisantha diandra) and like that species it is a Mediterranean neophyte alien (see the desription of that species) but unlike Great Brome, the spiklets tend to be held erect and don't spread. In recent decades it has become increasingly common in West Glamorgan and in south Wales in general. It is a species of disturbed habitats and found frequently along the edges of motorway and carriageway verges and in open mosaic, brownfield habitats. Where it occurs it is usually abundant.
