Anaphalis margaritacea Pearly Everlasting

Edafeddog Berlaidd

(Linnaeus) Benth.

Anaphalis margaritacea, Pearly Everlasting, is a distinctive white-hairy perennial that is native to North America where it is widespread in mountainous areas. It was first recorded in Britain in the early 18th Century and it has always had a strong affiliation with south Wales where it became conspicuous and abundant on old coal tips. It is a very striking species which produces clusters of everalsting flowers in summer. Plants spread by rhizomatous growth forming clusters of distinctive white, pubescent rosettes and also produce abundant seed. It is still found on old coal tips in West Glamorgan but it also particularly abundant along forest roads, especially in old quarries. It is an unmistakable species.
