Alopecurus myosuroides Black-grass

Chwyn Newynog

Huds.

Alopecurus myosuroides, Black-grass, is a grass of distubed ground and arable fields where it often occurs with winter-sown cereals. Although is fairly common in the southeast of England, it is much less common in Wales where it usually occurs as a casual species. Although it can be geniculate in its growth form it is usually much taller (up to 90cm tall) than Marsh Foxtail (Alopecurus geniculatus) and unlike that species it is an annual. It is rarely recorded in West Glamorgan but it occurs occasionally in arable fields in Gower and on distubed roadside verges elsewhere.
