Agrostis vinealis is a perennial grass of dry, upland, acidic grassland, e.g. heathland. It is often difficult to identify and separate from Agrostis canina and like that species its leaf has a long ligule and the spikelets have a prominent, bent awn. However, Agrostis vinealis is usually densely tufted (i.e. it doesn't form loose mats like Agrostis canina) and it grows in drier places. It is probably under recorded in West Glamorgan, where it is most common in the uplands.
