Abies grandis Giant Fir

Ffynidwydden Fawr

(Douglas ex D. Don) Lindl.

Native to the coastal rain forests of the Pacific Nortwest with some disjunct inland occurrences in the Rocky Mountains of Idaho and Montana. Giant trees over 70m tall with trunks up to 2m in diameter can be found in the Olympic Peninsular rain forests of Washington. In Britain it is found occasionally in large parks and in conifer plantations, but it is of relatively minor importance in British forestry. In West Glamorgan there are some fine trees in Glyncastle Forest near Resolven. Giant Fir is very shade tolerant and its seedlings grow well in the shade of other forest trees. It will self-sow occasionally and give rise to regenerating saplings.

Neophyte (but more usually planted)
