(Pursh) Poir.
A relatively small conifer (rarely more than 25m tall) that is native and endemic to the southern Apalachian Mountains in the eastern United States. It has a neat, narrow, conical shape and the needles emit a pleasant scent which has made it popular in recent years as a Christmas tree, along with Nordman Fir (Abies nordmanii) which doesn't have a strong scent. It is very closely related to Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea), which has a much wider distribution in the north-eastern United States and Canada, and some regard it only as a geographical subspecies of it. There are no records of Fraser Fir as a naturalised species in West Glamorgan.
