Sticta fuliginosa s. lat. Peppered Moon Lichen

Sticta fuliginosa is a foliose lichen of Atlantic woodlands, where it occurs as an epiphyte on mossy trees. It is very local in Britain and in West Glamorgan is currently only known on a few exposed willow trees in Rheola Forest. Recently, this taxon has been split into two species, Sticta fuliginosa and Sticta fuliginoides. The West Glamorgan specimens seem to resemble Sticta fuliginosa. The dark grey-brown thallus speckled with clustered, dark brown isidia and down-turned edges, make it very distinctive. Like other Sticta species, it has a fishy smell. Sticta fuliginoides usually has deeply funnel shaped thalli.
