Parmelia discordans

Nyl.

A distinctive foliose, rosette-forming lichen with palmate lobe apices. It is closely related to P. omphalodes, but is more coastal in West Glamorgan and has pseudocyphellae that are mostly marginal. The brown thallus often appears burnt by the seaspray.

Site details

Within the recording area, this species is locally frequent in west Gower, where quartz-conglomerate outcrops and boulders associated with the Brownstones Formation occur, sedimentary bedrock which formed during the Devonian. Typical associates at the northern end of Rhossili Down include Anaptychia runcinata, Fuscidea cyathoides, Lecanora gangaleoides, Ochrolechia parella and Ramalina siliquosa. Other less abundant associates recorded here include Nogopterium gracile, Pertusaria amara, Pertusaria pseudocorallina and Sphaerophorus globosus.
