A species of sheltered, humid habitats where it grows on mossy trunks and earth banks. Recent records within the recording area include a strong colony on a rotten trunk in wet birch woodland in margins of Crymlyn Bog, and multiple colonies established on silty sandstone blocks at Aberpergwm, where direct associates included Campylopus introflexus and Cephaloziella divaricata. The species forms compact cushions comprised of dense clusters of incised squamules, with pycnidia and apothecia on sessile / very short stalks. Sterile material cannot be identified with confidence. Thallus C–, K–, KC–, Pd+ red and UV–.
