Russula fellea Geranium Brittlegill

Tegyll Brau Chwerw

(Fr.) Fr.

Geranium Brittlegill (Russula fellea) is a species that is more or or less confined to Beech woodland in West Glamorgan. The cap is a subtle honey-ochre colour and the gills are ochre coloured at maturity. The mature stipe is also flushed ochre-yellow with age. It can be confused with Ochre Brittlegill (Russula ochroleuca), but that species occurs in all sorts of woodlands including conifer forests and its cap is usuallly a brighter yellow-ochre colour often with geenish tints. Geranium Brittlegill has a distictive smell of pelargonium in the cap (particularly the gills) but this smell can be faint.
