Cortinarius kauffmanianus

A.H. Sm.

Cortinarius kauffmanianus is a dark grey-brown coloured web cap with blue or purplish tinges. The cap is fibrillose and broadly umbonate with white or pale lilac remains of the veil around its margins. The stem is usually distinctly violaceous but the extent of the violet flushing is variable and sometimes only obvious at the top. It is an uncommon species in West Glamorgan occuring in Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis) forests, but there are few records of it. Unfortunately there is some confusion in the nomenclature of this species and it may be synonymous with Cortinarius biformis Fr. and Cortinarius argentiopileatis Nezdoim.
