Cortinarius brunneus

(Pers.) Fr.

Cortinarius brunneus, is a dark, chestnut-brown coloured webcap with broad gills that are quite distant. The cap, which has a prominent and often sharp umbo, becomes much paler rather quickly as it dries. It is a spruce forest species and is found frequently in Sitka Spruce (Picea sitchensis) plantations in West Glamorgan. It is rather similar to but usually larger than Cortinarius glandicolor, which grows with Pine.
