Cortinarius acutispissipes

Rob. Henry

Cortinarius acutispissipes is an attractive white or silver-grey coloured webcap, often with blueish tints in its broadly umbonate cap and at the top of its stem. The epithet acutispissipes refers to the pointed stem, which is only evident if the fruiting body is dug out carefully. This character will differentiate it from Cortinarius alboviolaceus which is otherwise very similar and often confused with it. Both species occur in broad-leaved woodlands with a preference for Birch. Most and perhaps all records of Cortinarius alboviolaceus in West Glamorgan are probably referable to Cortinarius acutispissipes.
