Weissia controversa var. densifolia

(Bruch, Schimp. & W.Guembel) Wilson

A very dense variety of Weissia controversa which is found on soil contaminated with heavy metals, particularly copper, lead and zinc, where it can form deep turfs. Soils receiving run-off from galvanised metal structures, such as crash-barrierers, are also favoured habitats. Most records are from southwestern Britain, particularly Wales and Cornwall. It has been found in a number of lowland areas of West Glamorgan. Sporophyte capsules are frequent in spring.
