Hedw.
ThisĀ is the most common variety of Weissia controversa in Britain and is widspread in West Glamorgan, particularly on non-calcareous soils. Extensive mounds are often found on bare soils along tracks, pavements and similar habitats. Key features of this variety are the colour of the leaf nerve, which is green rather than red and the relative size of the upper leaves, which are larger than the lower leaves. Apart from confusion with other varieties of Weissia controversa, confusion with Weissia brachycarpa is also possible and it is not possible to differentiate between these two species without capsules (see description of Weissia brachycarpa).
A general description of Weissia controversa is given separately.
