Tortula viridifolia Bristly Pottia

(Mitt.) Blockeel & A.J.E.Sm.

A small, pale green, autoicous, acrocarpous moss which grows on thin soils on cliffs and banks near the sea. It resembles a small form of Tortula truncata or Tortula caucasica (Tortula modica) but the leaves have a longer excurrent nerve which form a conspicuous hair point. It has an exclusovely coastal distribution in Britain, mostly in southwest England and west Wales. In West Glamorgan it is restricted to Gower where it is found along the south Gower coast from Mumbles to Rhosili. Sporophyte capsules are frequent in winter and spring.
