Tortula subulata Upright Screw-moss

Hedw.

An autoicous acrocarpous moss which grows on basic rock outcrops, walltops, woodland banks and on tree bases in the flood zone of rivers and streams. It is larger than other Tortula species with rosettes of large bright green, bordered leaves that have a conspicuous excurrent nerve. The long, narrow capsules which are held on dark red stalks are very distinctive. Although it has a scattered distribution in Britain, it is less common in the west and absent from much of west Wales and Ireland. It is very rare in West Glamorgan with just two records from the south Gower cliffs. Sporophytes capsules are common in summer.
