Tortula atrovirens Rib-leaf Moss

(Sm.) Lindb.

A very small, autoicous, acrocarpous moss which forms mats on thin, sandy soils on rocks, cliffs and walls in coastal, maritime environments. It is exclusively coastal in Britain with a predominantly western distribution. It is only found on the Gower limestone cliffs in Glamorgan and is probably mildly halophytic and able to tolerate sea spray more than other coastal bryophytes. Sporophyte capsules are abundant in winter and spring.
