Targionia hypophylla Orobus-seed Liverwort

L.

A monoicous, Mediterranean-Atlantic, thallose liverwort that grows on thin soils overlying rocks and walls in dry sunny habitats that dry out in summer. It is one of the most xerophytic liverworts in the British flora. While it is not a strict calcicole, it seems to prefer base-rich rocks such as limestone. It has a leathery thallus which is long and narrow, with purple margins, and it has a distinctive aromatic smell. It is rather scarce and declining in Britain and is very rare in south Wales. It was found new to Glamorgan by BS on Cwm Ivy Tor in 2023. Sporophyte capsules are frequent from winter to spring.
