Sphagnum tenellum Soft Bog-moss

(Brid.) Bory

A small and rather delicate, yellowish, dioicous bog-moss which grows on wet, acidic, peaty ground. It is the smallest Sphagnum in the British Flora and is unlikely to be confused with others. It is a Suboceanic species which has a western and northern distribution in Britain. It is is fairly widespread in Wales but rather uncommon in the southeast and southwest. It is occasional in West Glamorgan where there are records from the Gower Commons and the uplands of Neath Port Talbot. Sporophyte capsules are frequent in summer.
