Scapania paludicola Bog Earwort

Loeske & Muell.Frib.

A dioicous leafy liverwort which grows in bogs or flushes. It is similar to Scapania irrigua but its leaves have a strongly arching keel (see photos) and Scapania irrigua tends to grow in different habitats. It is a rare Boreo-arctic montane species in Britain with most of its sites in Wales and a single record in West Glamorgan from flushed marshy grassland near Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen in Neath Port Talbot. It usually requires diligent searching to find it and it is probably under recorded. Sporophytes are unknown in Britain.
