Scapania nemorea Grove Earwort

(L.) Grolle

A dioicous, calcifuge leafy liverwort which grows in humid habitats such as valley woodlands, banks, logs, decaying wood, walls and rock. It forms neat, pale green cushions whose finely-toothed leaves are usually sprinkled with brown gemmae, particularly at the tips of the shoots. It is a common species which is found throughout most of western and northern Britain and is widespread in Wales. In West Glamorgan it is most common in the South Wales Coalfield where it frequently found on the ground or on decaying wood in humid woodlands including conifer forests, damp heathland and on coal tips. Sporophytes are common.
