Scapania aspera Rough Earwort

M. & H.Bernet

A dioicous, calcicole leafy liverwort which is found on calcium-rich rock, such as limestone or lime-rich turf in places which are humid but not wet. Two of its key features are that the front leaf lobe, which is smaller than the back lobe, extends quite a long way down the stem and that the branches arise from the back of the stem. It is similar to Scapania aequiloba but in that species both leaf lobes are more or less the same size. It has a patchy western and northern distribution in Britain, including Wales, where it is confined to calcareous or basic habitats. In West Glamorgan it is confined to coastal limestone habitats along the Gower coast. Perinaths are common but sporophytes are rare in spring and summer.
