Riccia sorocarpa Common Crystalwort

Bisch.

A monoicous thallose liverwort which grows in arable fields and gardens, on bare compacted soils along paths and on waste ground. It is often smaller than Riccia glauca and differs from it by the distinct V-shaped grooves on the thallus lobes (see photos). It is probably the most common crystalwort in Britain with a fairly widespread distribution overall but it is largely a lowland and southern species in Wales. In West Glamorgan it is a lowland species that is most common in arable fileds and on bare ground in south Gower with scattered occurrences elsewhere. However, it can appear in large, ephemeral populations on bare ground almost anywhere where there is disturbed ground. Sporophyte are common throughout the year.
