Pseudocrossidium revolutum Revolute Beard-moss

(Brid.) R.H.Zander

A dioicous, calcicole, acrocarpous moss which grows as small, dense bright green cushions on limestone rock outcrops, quarries and walls. The small tongue-shaped leaves have a short, thick point and their recurved margins are tightly roled back like a scroll. It is a Submediterranean-Subatlantic species with a scattered but predominantly southern distribution in lowland Britain. It is found in calcareous areas of southwest and north Wales and in West Glamorgan it is only found in Gower, particularly where there is limestone. Sporophyte capsules are occasional in winter and spring.
