Pseudocrossidium hornschuchianum Hornschuch's Beard-moss

(Schultz) R.H.Zander

A small, dioicous, acrcocapous moss which forms fairly tight mounds and patches at the edges of paths and gravelled tracks especially where there is some calcareous influence. The bright green leaves have prominently recurved margins and spread to give the shoots a starry appearance. It is largely a lowland species of southern Britain, absent from much of the central upland of Wales and widespread in coastal areas of West Glamorgan. It extends inland in Neath Port Talbot along the main valleys and is found occasionally at the dges of forest roads that have been dressed with calcareous gravel. Spoophyte capsules are rare.
