(Hedw.) Lindb.
A dark-green, paroicous, acrocarpous, calcifuge moss which grows on acidic soils on heaths and moors. It is rather variable and sometimes difficult to identify but he narrow leaves and reddish stems are fairly distinctive and the normally pendulous capsules have a long tapering neck. It is found throughout Britain but it has shown significant declines in its abundance in some areas in recent decades. It is frequent on the heaths and moors of Wales and it is scattered throughout West Glamorgan particularly in the acidic uplands of the South Wales Coalfield. Sporophyte capsules are common in summer.
