Pohlia lutescens Yellow Thread-moss

(Limpr.) H.Lindb.

A small, pale coloured, dioicous, acrocarpous moss. It grows on bare soils on paths and banks near streams and along ditches. Safe identification requires microscopic examination and confirmation of the knobbly, rhizoidal tubers (see photo). It is often quite inconspicuous, groing in scattered patches which are easy to miss. Consequently, it is probably under recorded. It has a mostly western distribution in southern Britain with scattered occurences in southern and eastern England. It is more widespread in western Wales but it is rare in West Glamorgan. Male plants are very rare in Britain and sporophyte capsules are unknown.
