(Renauld & Cardot) Broth.
A dioicous acrocarpous moss which is similar to Pohlia annotina and sometimes grows with it but is much less common and has just one bulbil, different in shape, in the axil of each leaf (see photo). It is a charcteristic species of exposed reservoir margins, banks by other water bodies and on damp tracks. It is a Suboceanic species with a largely western distribution in much of Britain, but more scattered in Scotland. However, it was only described in 1978 and remains under recorded in much of Britain. Recording in Wales has been better where its occurrence appears to have a distinct western bias. There are a few scattered records in West Glamorgan, mostly in the South Wales Coalfield, but very few from Gower. Sporophyte capsules are unknown in Britain and populations rely entirely on bulbil production and dispersal for propagation.
