(Hedw.) Lindb.
A small, pale-green, dioicous, acrocarpous moss which grows in open habitats on sandy or gravelly soils at the sides of tracks, reservoir margins, stream banks and quarries often growiing with species such as Achidium alternifolium and Nardia scalaris. One of its characteristic features is the production of branched bulbils, of various shapes, that cluster in the axils of the leaves and which are visible to the naked eye. It is a species mostly of western and northern Britain and is found throughout Wales. It is scattered in much of West Glamorgan but is relatively uncommon in Gower. Sporophyte capsules are rare and populations rely mostly on bulbil production and dispersal for propagation.
