Physcomitrium pyriforme Common Bladder-moss

(Hedw.) Brid.

An autoicous, acrocarpous moss which forms tufts on bare soil in open places, such as cultivated land, trampled paths, areas poached by cattle and also on mud in marshy fields. It is much less restricted to arable land than Entoshodon fascicularis, which it resembles, and differs from it in the abruptly pointed, nipple-like capsule lid and the usually symmetrical calyptra. It is reasonably common throughout much of England and it locally frequent in south Wales, particularly in the west. There are scattered records in West Glamorgan, mostly from arable fields. Sporophyte capsules are abundant in spring and summer.
