Philonotis calcarea Thick-nerved Apple-moss

(Bruch & Schimp.) Schimp.

An attractive, pale green, dioicous, acrocarpous moss which is found in base-rich flushes, marshes with calcareous seepages, tufa and dune slacks. It is a distinctive, large, Apple-moss with leaves curved in rows on one side, all pointing in the same direction. Its distribution in Britain is mostly in the west and north and it is occasional in some parts of Wales, particularly in the uplands. It is uncommon in West Glamorgan with records from the Gower Commons and a few sites in the uplands where there are calcareous flushes. Sporophyte capsules are rare in summer.
