Pellia endiviifolia Endive Pellia

(Dicks.) Dumort.

A dark-green, dioicous thallose liverwort which occurs in base-rich or slightly acidic habitats including soil and rock. It can found in woodland, particularly on clay banks, dune slacks, near running water  and where water seeps over rock. The frilly branches at the margins of the thallus are produced in abundance in autumn and make it obvious and almost unmistakable. However, a possible source of confusion is Riccardia chamedryfolia, but the frilly branches of Pellia endiviifolia can usually be seen to arise from a typical, broad Pellia thallus after inspection. It is common in Britain except in the far north, it is found throughout Wales and it is a widespread species in West Glamorgan particularly in the lowlands. Sporophytes are frequent in spring.
