A dioicous, pleurocarpous moss which is similar to Palustriella commutata and sometimes considered to be a variety of it. However the branching of the shoots is not as regular (subpinnate) and there are few or no rhizoids on the stems. It also has a more chunky appearance. Like Palustriella commutata, it is a species of base-rich flushes and seepages but is much less dependent on the presence of calcium than that species. Its British distribution is also similar but it is much less common in West Glamorgan where it is most often seen in base-rich flushes in the uplands, sometimes at the edges of forest roads that have been dressed with limestone gravel. Sporophyte capsules, which occur in summer, are uncommon.
