Moerckia flotoviana

(Nees) Schiffn.

A yellow-green, dioicous thallose liverwort which grows in calcareous flushes, fens and dune slacks. It has a fishy smell and the wavy margins to the thallus give it a distinctive appearance like crispy lettuce. Male plants have conspicuous fringed scales. It is rare in Britain and probably on the decline in many places, such as the fens of eastern England. It has also disappeared from many of its former dune slack sites in Wales. That includes all of its former locations in West Glamorgan, which were at Whiteford dunes and nearby vicinities, where it has not been seen in recent decades. Sporophytes are occasional.

Moerckia flotoviana and Moerckia hibernica were previously regarded as separate species but are currently regarded as synonymous.
