Microbryum davallianum Smallest Pottia

(Sm.) R.H.Zander

A very small, autoicous acrocarpous moss. This ephemeral Submeditteranean species is a pioneer and colonist of distubed calcareous soils, including arable fields, calcareous grassland and coastal and calcareous cliffs. It is a southern species in Britain, most commomly associated with calcareous soils in the south and east and distributed sparingly around the coast of Wales, including the south Gower coast which is where it is found mainly in West Glamorgan. The long, sporophyte capsules are very distinctive (see photo) and are abundant in winter and spring.
