Mesoptychia bantriensis Bantry Notchwort

(Hook.) L. Söderstr. & Vána

A fairly large, pale-green, dioicous, Boreal-montane leafy liverwort, which occurs in calcareous flushes, fens and wet rocks at the sides of sreams and rivers in the uplands. It is generally bigger than the other more common notchworts described here and its shoots are more translucent. Small plants may be confused with Mesopytchia collaris which occurs in similar habitats, albeit restricted to the uplands. It has a distinct western and northern distribution in Britain and it is largely an upland species in Wales, occurring widely in Bannau Brechyniog. It is very rare in West Glamorgan where the only records are from riverside rocks in the headstream valleys of the Vale of Neath. Sporophytes are rare.
