A small, paoicous leafy liverwort which usually has bright red gemmae on the shoot tips and, like other Lophozia species, it has bilobed leaves. It is a pioneer, opportunistic species which grows in various habitats such as on coal spoil, open mosaic habitats, bare gritty, sandy or peaty ground, wall tops, heathland and moorland. It is largely a calcifuge species but it can be found growing on leached soil on coastal limestone cliffs. It is a lowland species with a scattered distribution in Britain, mostly in the west and north and it is locally frequent in Wales.
