(Hedw.) Wilson
A synoicous or dioicous, acrocarpous moss which occurs as a weed in flower pots, greenhouses, walls, sandstone rocks and cliffs, arable fields and open disturbed waste places. The narrow, widely spreading leaves at the top of the otherwise rather bare looking stems give it a distinctive appearance. It often produces dark purple-brown tubers on its brown rhizoids near the base of the stems. It is most common in eastern Britain and is scarce in many parts of Wales. There are scattered records of it in West Glamorgan. The narrowly pear-shaped, nearly horrizontal or slightly drooping sporophyte capsules are common.
